5 reasons why Curry could become a Sixer: Chance to Compete

The final reason that Steph Curry could likely become a Philadelphia 76er is simple – title contention. Yes, he is a three-time scoring champ, soon to be a seven-time All-NBA player with two MVP trophies, but how many accolades does a player need?

It is the chance to build his championship ring collection that would be the most enticing factor for Curry to come back east. He could stay in the race for title runs with the Sixers instead of scratching and clawing to come out of the Western Conference just to qualify for a spot in the play-in tournament. This is not how an aging Hall-of-Fame player wants to end his career.

The landscape of the Eastern Conference is not half as rigorous as out west. With the Brooklyn Nets aging, along with the Bucks and Heat not getting any younger, Philly has a nice assortment of young talent that could persuade Curry to suit up for the Sixers.

More from The Sixer Sense

If you are Curry, playing with defensive studs like Ben Simmons and Matisse Thybulle is more than interesting. With other blossoming scorers like Tyrese Maxey and Isaiah Joe, Curry could be a wonderful asset as a veteran with tremendous wisdom to share. Not to mention Joel Embiid, who will only be 28 years old when and if Steph Curry joins the 76ers.

It may be tough for the 76ers to sign Curry with their current roster of stars making $25 million a year plus. To sign Curry, the Sixers may have to deal Tobias Harris, who would be in the third year of his max contract deal. At that point of Curry’s free agency, Harris would still have value in terms of his production, and a young team with salary cap space in a small market could afford to bring in Harris.

Speaking of money, how much more of it does Curry need? For those who think he would stay in Golden State to cash checks just to compete in the middle of the pack out west, think again.

According to Forbes, he earns $30 million in salary and $44 million in endorsements. He’s a mega star who is a family man and has an untarnished image that is worth its weight in gold in terms of personal brand. Does he want to see his star fade with the Warriors on a non-contending team or does he want to bring his solid brand to the Sixers where he can boost his chances of winning more titles? Only time will tell as his status as an unrestricted free agent gains more attention.

As the 76ers blow out their opponent on opening night, the ecstatic Philly crowd sings along with the Sixers’ theme song. Embiid put up 30 points and Steph Curry put up 28 points, knocking down seven 3-pointers with ease. The two stars high five at half court, anticipating a playoff run and legit title shot. It is the start of something special.

Curry has a new home, coach, and team. For the Philadelphia 76ers, he brings a familiar electric feeling he once gave Golden State fans. For the NBA, teams better keep their umbrellas ready because Steph Curry will keep making it rain on the competition, except he will be doing so in a Sixers jersey.
