The Philadelphia 76ers are widely expected to explore the Ben Simmons trade market this offseason. After yet another early exit in the postseason, the fanbase has run out of patience for the three-time All-Star. It’s a matter of when, not if Simmons will get sent elsewhere.
A recent report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski casts new light on Simmons’ future with the franchise. According to Woj, Simmons’ agent Rich Paul met with the front office this week to discuss the 24-year-old’s situation. No trade request was made, and the Sixers still view Simmons as a foundational piece, but the marketplace is “still significant” in light of Simmons’ Game 7 flameout.
The Sixers should be able to field reasonably strong offers for Ben Simmons this summer.
While I am skeptical of the Sixers recouping equal talent for Simmons, a trade that nets either more depth, or just a significantly better fit, may ultimately benefit Philadelphia. It’s within reason to doubt Joel Embiid’s desire to ride out the Ben Simmons experiment any longer, and again, the fans would welcome change — of just about any kind.

Daryl Morey is not stupid, and he will not hand Simmons away for pennies on the dollar. The report mentions Philadelphia’s reluctance to deal Simmons until all avenues are exhausted with respect to his shooting, but even then, no front office would openly report a star’s availability (on purpose, at least), lest they lose leverage in negotiations. The Sixers appear ready to keep Simmons around until next season, but ultimately, a trade must come.
"“We have a very strong group we believe in. None of us can predict the future of what’s going to happen in any, in any place. We love what Ben brings, we love what Joel brings, we love what Tobias brings. In terms of what’s next, we’re going to do what’s best for the 76ers to give us the best chance to win the championship with every single player on the roster.” — Sixers President Daryl Morey, via ESPN"
Morey is not afraid of big moves. He is equally patient and aggressive, with a clearly defined goal of maximizing the Sixers’ championship window. At this point, it would appear Simmons does not maximize said window. Trading him for a significantly worse player, however, would not serve Morey’s goal. The Sixers will wait as long as necessary. Only a trade demand (either from Simmons, or from higher-ups in the organization, be it ownership or, say, Joel Embiid) would force Morey to change his operating procedure.
For now, expect a long offseason of smokescreens and GM speak in the media. The Sixers doubtlessly want to move on from Simmons. It is simply a matter of getting the right offer. If the market is as strong as Woj suggests, then maybe the trade comes sooner than later. If not, do not be surprised if No. 25 is on the floor opening night.
