2021 NBA Draft — 8. Franz Wagner, Orlando Magic
A ready-made role player with considerable two-way upside, Franz Wagner would fit nicely just about anywhere. The Magic have no shortage of young talent, and you can seldom go wrong with versatile 3-and-D wings. At 6-foot-9, Wagner shows great awareness defensively, with the size and foot speed to switch screens and defend multiple positions. On offense, he’s the perfect complementary piece.
The Magic have several ball-dominant guards — Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony, RJ Hampton — as well as a nice accumulation of long bodies who can fill multiple roles. Add Wagner on top of Kuminga, and all of a sudden Orlando has the personnel to go big or small, depending on matchup.
Wagner is a smooth spot-up shooter who doesn’t get bogged down by poor decisions. He’s a snappy passer and cutter, willing to move into open space or set screens to free up teammates. He does it on both ends and — as the cherry on top — he would potentially join his brother Moe, who finished last season with Orlando.
