Possible free agents for Sixers’ mid-level exception: Nicolas Batum

After many believed he was thoroughly cooked in Charlotte, Nicolas Batum revived his career in a big way with LA. He played a big role in the Clippers’ conference finals run, with an impact that stretched far beyond the box score. He’s clearly not a spring chicken, but the 32-year-old Batum is well worth a look from Philadelphia.

Batum spent over half of last season in the Clippers’ starting lineup. He averaged 8.1 points and 4.7 rebounds in 27.4 minutes per game, with an impressive 40.4 percent success rate from behind the 3-point line. He’s the prototypical glue guy offensively — a great shooter and ball-mover who understands his role completely. He will screen, cut, pass, shoot, all without demanding the ball or clogging up possessions. He’s a winning player.

In addition to his offense, Batum still has some juice defensively, too. He’s not as quick laterally as he once was, but at 6-foot-8, he has the size and versatility to guard 3s or 4s on a regular basis. Much like P.J. Tucker, Batum has the ability to play in groups big or small. He gives the Sixers options in the second unit.

The Sixers are looking for players who can contribute reliably to a championship contender. Batum has proven he can still do so, and if the Clippers aren’t willing to spend on his return, Philadelphia should swoop in and make a run.
