Possible free agents for Sixers’ mid-level exception: Paul Millsap

Even if Ben Simmons is not part of the Sixers’ future plans, there is reason to believe a more modern backup five would serve the team well. Enter Paul Millsap, a grizzled veteran who the Sixers would be wise to approach if he’s open to leaving Denver.

Long gone are Millsap’s day in the All-Star conversation, but he’s still a strong role player who can impact winning on both sides of the ball. Millsap shot only 34.6 percent from deep last season, but he’s a capable spot-up shooter who defenses respect on the perimeter. He also has as high a basketball I.Q. as any player on the list, with great passing acumen and an selfless disposition.

Millsap would help the offense in many of the same ways as Blake Griffin or Nic Batum, if lacking some of the dynamism still present in Griffin’s game. On defense, Millsap can still get it done, with enough foot speed to switch screens and a strong 257-pound frame capable of waging battle in the post.

The 36-year-old is reaching his last legs, but Millsap still gave the Nuggets plenty in the second unit last season. Were it not for the Aaron Gordon trade, he would have been starting on a playoff team. He’s someone Morey would be wise to consider.
