Possible free agents for Sixers’ mid-level exception: Bryn Forbes

Again, the Sixers currently employ several rotation-level guards. Even so, if push comes to shove, there are much worse ways to spend the mid-level exception than Bryn Forbes, who stood out in the Bucks’ first-round sweep of Miami. He’s one of the best off-ball shooters in the NBA, which has traditionally held a lot of value with this Sixers team.

Forbes can fly over the court and hit difficult, off-balance 3s at a fiery pace. He would very much fill the J.J. Redick void, with a skill set even Seth Curry can’t fully replicate. All the DHOs Embiid and Redick used to run would be similarly effective for Forbes. Have him run off a screen or two, dump the ball off behind the 3-point line, and let him fire away. Forbes needs little airspace to get his shot off.

This season, Forbes shot 45.2 percent on 4.9 attempts per game from deep. He blends efficiency and volume to a rare degree, and would give the Sixers another certified gunner to play behind Curry. With Korkmaz all but gone, the Sixers need to make up the 3-point volume somehow. Forbes is a marked improvement.

Philadelphia is well equipped to cover for Forbes’ small stature on defense. He’s pretty much an offense-only player, but the Sixers can get a lot out of that in the regular season. He may be more of a situational piece in the playoffs, but if the likes of P.J. Tucker and Nic Batum are unavailable, Forbes seems like a gettable piece who can undoubtedly boost the second unit.
