2021 NBA Mock Draft — 20. Trey Murphy III, Atlanta Hawks
There’s a lot of positive buzz around Trey Murphy at the moment, and understandably so. The NBA has no shortage of need for 6-foot-9 wings who shoot 43.3 percent from 3-point range. Atlanta is one of the NBA’s deepest teams, with a delicately balanced roster crafted around the wizardly playmaking of Trae Young.
Murphy would give the Hawks more of a good thing. He’s not absolutely essential on paper — DeAndre Hunter and Cam Reddish both eclipse him in the short-term, while Bogdan Bogdanovic, Danilo Gallinari, and Kevin Huerter provide a healthy dose of spot-up 3s each night — but Murphy is tailor-made for the modern NBA. He has useful role player written all over him, and the Hawks would not be unwise to invest.
John Collins can still walk in free agency, and the Hawks can always use this as a trade chip in pursuit of another star to pair with Trae Young. Either way, Murphy has a skill set other teams would gladly acquire, and he’s more than capable of outplaying the likes of Solomon Hill or Tony Snell in year one.
