2021 NBA Mock Draft — 23. Usman Garuba, Detroit Pistons

With patience running low on Sekou Doumbouya, and a bounty of offensive firepower acquired in the form of Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr., the Pistons can use this pick to reinforce the defense. Usman Garuba has the potential to be one of this draft’s top defenders.

At 6-foot-8, Garuba has the size and strength to play the three or four, providing both versatility and relentless activity. He makes the extra effort every time, with a constant desire to impose his will on the game. That alone sings the song of a great many useful role players, but Garuba will need to improve offensively to out-perform his draft slot.

Garuba is not without his gifts offensively. He’s a willing passer, who understands how to move without the ball and make himself available. Unfortunately, he’s not much of a shooter, and pessimism in that department could scare teams away. Garuba is not yet someone defenses need to worry about. The defense is great, and the will to succeed is there, but the jumper has to improve.
