3 reasons the Sixers should re-sign Danny Green: Veteran wisdom

Green has lost some points in this category for his misguided criticism of Philly fans, but even so, he’s a 34-year-old with a long list of accomplishments in the NBA. First and foremost, he’s a three-time champion, and he won with three different franchises. He brings a lot to a locker room.

The Sixers’ leadership structure clearly improved from 2019-20 to 2020-21. Some would point to Doc Rivers and be done with it, but it doesn’t take extensive digging or well-placed sources to see Green’s impact on the team. He clearly brought valuable wisdom to a relatively young group.

Not many players on the Sixers’ roster are smarter than Green. His signature back-door, cross-court “Danny Green Cut” was adopted by multiple Sixers all season, while his defensive I.Q. surely helped somewhat in the Sixers’ jump to league-best defense.

Whether Simmons returns or not, the Sixers are a team that still hasn’t learned to win and execute at the highest level. Green was on the roster last season, but he wasn’t on the court in the Atlanta series, and I would be hard-pressed to believe he harmed Philadelphia’s development in that department. Green the person is just as valuable as Green the player.
