2021 NBA Draft Big Board — 28. Jared Butler, Baylor
Jared Butler was one of the best guards in college basketball, leading Baylor to a national championship as half of the Bears’ dynamic two-pronged backcourt. He is not a particularly great athlete at 6-foot-3, but Butler’s confident shot-making and veteran disposition will make him a quick fit in the NBA.
Last season, Butler scored efficiently at every level, hitting 41.6 percent of his 3s and showing promise as a physical driver who’s willing to absorb contact at the rim. He can play on or off the ball, and despite his small frame, is a pesky point-of-attack defender who will hold his ground on that end. He’s tailor-made to join a contender and contribute right away.
2021 NBA Draft Big Board — 27. JT Thor, Auburn
The Auburn freshman will be viewed as a long-term project, but even so, JT Thor’s tools make it hard not to get excited. He’s a tremendous athlete at 6-foot-9, with a 7-foot-3 wingspan. He can defend adequately on the perimeter, or weaponize his length as a rim protector. His main upside lies on defense, where if things break right, he should one day be able to guard all over the floor.
On offense, there’s reason for optimism, too. He shot under 30 percent from deep last season, but his stroke is workable and there are positive indicators for potential improvement. At the rim, he’s an explosive finisher who should get more comfortable handling traffic over time. He’s only 18, and has a lot to work with.
