8 former players that the club could sign in free agency: Backcourt players

Ish Smith (2014-15 and 2015-16)

Starting off this list with a player who had two separate stints with the Philadelphia 76ers. This isn’t the first time I’ve written about Ish Smith being a potential free agent target. When he was on the Sixers, he was one of the few players that brought some level of stability to the point guard position during Philly’s rebuild dubbed “The Process”.

He’s a solid veteran point guard that can run a second unit’s offense. He’s not a good shooter, but he can finish around the rim and his playmaking would be a nice addition to the second unit. If he decides he wants to be in a winning situation, leaving the Washington Wizards for the 76ers would be a good call.

Alec Burks (2019-20)

For a brief time;18 regular season games and one playoff series, Alec Burks appeared to be the team’s best sixth man since Lou Williams was on the roster. Burks can be a dynamic scorer off the bench, which was the role he served for the Sixers two years ago and the New York Knicks this past season. If he is willing to sign the mid-level exception, then he should be on Philly’s radar.

At 6-foot-6, Burks has good size for a backcourt player. Considering that most of the guards on the 76ers roster are undersized, Burks would be a welcomed addition.

J.J. Redick (2017-19)

In J.J. Redick‘s short time with the Sixers, he quickly became one of the franchise’s best 3-point shooters in its illustrious history. Sadly, his career since his departure from the City of Brotherly love has been less than stellar. He missed the playoffs for the first time in his career two years ago and then last season he had one of the worst shooting years of his career.

Redick should return because of his familiarity with the team’s core and coach Rivers. It also allows him to be close to his family. His play this past season should make it possible for the team to sign him to the Mid-Level exception, if not a minimum contract. If he returns and finds his touch again, it would be a major steal for the 76ers.

Lou Williams (2005-12)

Don’t forget about Lou Williams aka “Lemon Pepper Lou”. He’s been one of the best sixth men in NBA history. Winning three Sixth Man of the Year awards, one with the Toronto Raptors and two with the Los Angeles Clippers.

It’s totally possible Williams stays put with the Atlanta Hawks as they are his hometown team. However, if he were to leave, he could return to where his long NBA career began and play for the coach that helped him win two of those awards. Williams isn’t as good as he once was, but he can still provide a spark to the second unit when needed.
