2021 NBA Mock Draft — 9. Franz Wagner, Sacramento Kings

The Kings have come up in trade rumors of late, so this is another pick that could get traded. There’s a lot of that going around. If Sacramento stays put, it’s likely with the intention of adding a day-one contributor who can bolster a vein attempt at playoff relevancy. Franz Wagner would fit the bill.

Wagner was one of the better wing defenders in college basketball. At 6-foot-9, he’s hyper-aware, using active hands and a 220-pound frame to muck up the opposing offense. He can play either forward spot, and would give Sacramento some much needed connective tissue next to De’Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton.

Sacramento’s wing rotation is not particularly deep, with Harrison Barnes and Buddy Hield shouldering outsized responsibilities. Wagner is not a go-to scorer, but he won’t need to be. He’s a great role player, with impeccable offensive instincts, real passing chops, and a team-friendly approach to the game.
