There’s no denying that the Philadelphia 76ers need to improve depth at the center position. There’s been plenty of players who have tried to do a good job but failed backing up Embiid. Jahlil Okafor, Nerlens Noel, Richaun Holmes, Amir Johnson, Tiago Splitter, Mike Muscala, Justin Patton, Greg Monroe, Boban Marjanovic, Al Horford, Jonah Bolden, Norvel Pelle, Kyle O’Quinn, Mike Scott, and Dwight Howard are all on that list.
Ed Davis shouldn’t be a player that joins that long list of backup centers in Embiid’s career. Don’t be mistaken, during his prime, Ed Davis was a very good backup center in the NBA. He was a good defender, elite rebounder, and good finisher around the rim.
However, the last three years, Davis hasn’t fair so well and barely played for a struggling Minnesota Timberwolves who were missing star center Karl-Anthony Towns for big portions of the season. This past season, he only averaged 2.1 points and 5.0 rebounds for 23 games this past year.
Davis was a good backup center in his prime, but at the age of 32-years-old, the big man appears closer to being out of the league versus being in a rotation next season. He’s one guy the Sixers should stay clear of in free agency.
There are plenty of quality free agents for the Philadelphia 76ers to choose from, but the four on this list shouldn’t be an option for the franchise.
