5 power forwards free agent options: James Johnson

Last but not least, there’s James Johnson, one of the toughest players in the NBA. Johnson is a solid 6-foot-7 and 240 lbs. He’s a gritty player that every contender should want to have on their bench.

More from The Sixer Sense

Last season Johnson was paid around $16 million, but to be honest, he’s more of a minimum contract player at the age of 34-years-old. He was traded last season, so there shouldn’t be a strong sense of loyalty for the Dallas Mavericks. There’s a legit shot that the Sixers can sign him this offseason.

He averaged 7.2 points and 3.5 rebounds last season. His shooting wasn’t great as he only made 25.8 percent of his 3-pointers. However, the previous season he shot about 36.3 percent from deep, so there’s hope that he can find that again.

Johnson’s true value is on the defensive end and not offense. While it won’t show up on the box score, Johnson’s defensive versatility makes him worth a look in free agency. He can guard all three front court positions. His lateral quickness and strength makes him indispensable on that end of the floor.

There are some quality power forwards that would offer the Philadelphia 76ers versatility coming off the bench and better depth than they had last year.
