He’s staying right the Furk here. The Sixers have broken the seal on free agency, re-signing Furkan Korkmaz to a three-year, $15 million contract, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. This is the first domino to fall in what could be a quiet free agency period for the franchise.

This does not come as a surprise. Korkmaz voiced his desire to return after last season, and he played a critical role off the Sixers’ bench — even starting in the playoffs after Danny Green got hurt. With Green still undecided on a potential return, Korkmaz could be looking at even greater responsibilities in 2021-22.

This is — simply put — the right move for Philadelphia, if not a loud move.

The Sixers can continue to develop Furkan Korkmaz as a dangerous bench shooter.

Last season, Korkmaz led the roster in 3-point attempts per 36 minutes. That volume is essential next to Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. The latter may not return for next season, but even with a roster built entirely around Embiid, there are few skills more valuable than volume shooting. Korkmaz’s confidence, while at times a little too unwavering, is a key element of the Sixers’ offensive chemistry.

Also, this deal comes at remarkable value for the Sixers. Given the general market for elite shooters — Doug McDermott getting $42 million, Duncan Robinson getting $90 million — getting Korkmaz’s services at $5 million per year feels like a steal. He’s not on the same level as those names, but he’s a career 37.7 percent 3-point shooter with room to improve at 24 years old. He has improved drastically as a defender over the past year, and is a willing passer.

With Korkmaz locked down, the Sixers have the entire second unit from last season under contract, save for Mike Scott and Dwight Howard. That second unit wasn’t particularly strong, but Korkmaz was one of the few bright spots. He should see at least the 19.3 minutes per game he averaged last season, if not more.
