Philadelphia 76ers working on deal with Charles Bassey
The Philadelphia 76ers are basically done for the offseason in terms of making moves. They’ve signed five free agents and drafted three players. However, they still have one piece of unfinished business with one of their second round picks from this past draft.
Charles Bassey was the 53rd pick in the 2021 NBA draft and yet despite being a late second round pick, he and the franchise has yet to figure out a working contract that both sides can agree to. It should be noted that according to Noah Levick of NBCSPhilly, the two sides are working out the length of the contract. It will either be a one year or multi-year deal.
What type of deal would work out for both sides?
To be honest, the number of years shouldn’t matter for the Sixers as much as Bassey. The 76ers can work it out so that only the amount of years can be fully, partially, or non-guaranteed. Considering that Philly is still shopping Ben Simmons, making sure that Bassey’s deal is either partially or fully non-guaranteed would help make a deal more plausible.

If Bassey’s deal is partially or fully non-guaranteed then he can be included in a Simmons trade, another deal, or waived a lot easier. Bassey was a late second round pick for a reason and it might be hard to move him in a deal if teams can’t easily waive him. However, that’s not the only reason why the Sixers should try to make his deal partially or fully non-guaranteed.
The 76ers also selected center Filip Petrusev in the same draft with the 50th pick and he does have more upside than Bassey. For now, Petrusev appears to be going back to play in Europe for this upcoming season.
However, if he makes another jump in his development, then the Sixers could be tempted to bring him over for the 2022-23 season. If that’s the case, it’s doubtful that the team would want both Bassey and Petrusev, unless Petrusev is on a two-way contract, which seems unlikely.
In short, it’s in the best interest of the Philadelphia 76ers not be committed to Bassey for a long time. Whether it be a one year or multi-year deal that isn’t fully guaranteed, Bassey is a player that the Sixers should want flexibility with at the moment.
