The Sixers are going to trade Ben Simmons. It’s a matter of if, not when. While the team is reportedly willing to take Simmons into the regular season, it is abundantly clear that is not the preferred course of action. At this point, the two sides appear fixated on the same goal: a “mutual” breakup.

It’s all for the better. At least, that’s what Sixer fans will tell themselves. Simmons stunk up the gym in the Sixers’ stomach-turning Game 7 loss to Atlanta, which exacerbated growing concerns over his fit next to Joel Embiid long term. It appears that Philadelphia’s ceiling is capped so long as Simmons is the team’s second-best player.

With that in mind, a trade could (and probably should) happen before training camp in late September. While Philly could gamble and put Ben on the floor this season, it’s clear he doesn’t want to be there. The potential for an ugly situation might force Daryl Morey’s hand.

Who are some under-the-radar names the Sixers should target in a potential Ben Simmons trade?

Damian Lillard is the preferred return in any Simmons trade. That said, Philly and Portland look to be on different timelines. Lillard has pretty much said he will start the season in Portland, and could stay indefinitely as the Blazers attempt to build a contender around him. The Sixers, on the other hand, are stuck in a game of hot potato with no one to throw it to.

There are teams willing to take Simmons, of course — just not for the price Morey would like. Simmons is a three-time All-Star and one of the best defenders in the NBA. Oh, and he’s only 25. Naturally, the Sixers expect a significant return. That said, the unique scope of Simmons’ offensive limitations — combined with the sour taste he left in everyone’s mouth — will probably force the Sixers to compromise.

Thankfully, if you’re Philadelphia, a Simmons trade does not remove you from the Lillard sweepstakes. Depending on Portland’s view of Simmons, it could theoretically increase their odds down the line. The Sixers will likely get a collection of players and picks, which could be packaged together with Philadelphia’s other first-round picks to inundate Portland with future assets.

On that note, let us explore some less talked about players worth considering in a hypothetical Simmons trade.
