Re-drafting the 2019 NBA Draft — 5. R.J. Barrett, Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavs would happily take Darius Garland again, but in this re-draft, they will have to settle for R.J. Barrett. There are worse outcomes. Barrett is a unique and sometimes complex player to evaluate, but he’s an elite physical specimen who shot 40.1 percent from 3 last season.

The Cavs probably need more shooting on the wing, and while Barrett hit a healthy percentage of his 3s last season, he’s still not defended like a “shooter.” He does most of his damage getting downhill, using his rock-solid frame to bully smaller defenders and finish through contact at the rim. Barrett and Sexton could overlap a bit offensively, and Cleveland’s playmaking void would be vast, but there’s something to be said for stockpiling talent.

Barrett also has potential to improve Cleveland’s defense. Garland’s biggest drawback is his small stature and slender frame. He’s a constant target for opposing offenses. In Barrett, the Cavs get a versatile 6-foot-7 wing who can defend across positions, and who is known for his consistent effort.
