Possible outcomes for Ben Simmons’ return to Sixers: The miracle

This is easily the unlikeliest outcome, and frankly, it’s probably the most unpopular outcome too. In this scenario, the Sixers would succeed in convincing Simmons to remain in Philly long term. Doc Rivers’ public backing and reimagined rotations would appease Simmons, while Morey would slowly move away from trade talks in favor of strengthening the relationship between franchise and star.

With the indirect barbs traded between Simmons and Joel Embiid, it is extremely difficult to imagine a world in which Simmons spends the next four years with PHILA across his chest. That’s without even considering the fit, which is absolutely problematic on the offensive end. A trade feels not only inevitable, but necessary.

That said — as has been mentioned throughout the article — we live in a strange and unpredictable world. We have seen burned bridges mended, and the Sixers do have a financial grip on Simmons. How long could Simmons reasonably expect to sit out? What if the Sixers still don’t trade him at the deadline? Philly can really force Simmons’ hand if so desired.

In the end, a trade feels predetermined. There is no clear path to reconciliation, with Simmons going out of his way all summer to not only express his discontent, but place blame on various parties within the organization. Fair or not, Simmons has made his stance clear so far. This is more pipe dream (or pipe nightmare, depending on the person) than anything else.
