As the Ben Simmons saga continues to drag on and continues to look increasingly toxic, let’s take a look at some of the point guards that the Sixers missed out on this past offseason. I’ve broken these players down into three categories: “The Veterans”, “The Ring Chasers” and “Something to Prove.”
Some of these guys could definitely be in multiple categories or their own category all together.
Veteran point guards the Sixers missed in free agency
- Kyle Lowry
Lowry would seemingly be a perfect fit for what the Sixers need. He’s from Philadelphia and played at Villanova. The would-be homecoming isn’t what would make Lowry a great fit though. He provides a veteran presence and great leadership, something that has been lacking. Lowry is a winner and would likely be ready and willing to slide into a role as prolific third option offensively. Lowry can still score at a high level and really command the game from the point guard position.
- Rajon Rondo
Rondo is more on the downswing of his career than Lowry would be, but along with that comes the fact that the Sixers could’ve signed Rondo on the cheap. He also provides that veteran presence that seems to be lacking in the locker room.
Rondo’s personality can be a little bit of risk as far as how he fits in with big personalities. This has been much less of an issue as Rondo has grown in his career and settled into more a reserve role more recently. The former All-Star would’ve likely fit in to more of backup role in Philly but could also really push the likes of Shake Milton and Seth Curry for playing time and for a starting role.
Let’s also take a moment to acknowledge that while Rondo has a reputation as a poor shooter he made huge strides in his 3 point shooting over the years and would still provide a big upgrade over public enemy number 1 in Philadelphia right now at least in that area.
