NBA power rankings — Raptors, Knicks, Nuggets

  • 12. Toronto Raptors (6-5)

The Raptors have been surging lately, with Pascal Siakam’s return adding more fuel to the fire. Toronto has one of the best defenses in the league. That, combined with Fred VanVleet’s leadership, OG Anunoby’s leap to stardom, and Scottie Barnes’ strong early push for Rookie of the Year, has made Toronto one of the most surprising contenders thus far. A lot of people expected this to be a transitional year for the Raptors, but there’s enough talent to make a real postseason run.

  • 11. Denver Nuggets (6-4)

With Jamal Murray still on the sidelines and Michael Porter Jr. undergoing tests on his back, the injures are once again looming large for Denver. To make matters worse, Nikola Jokic could face a multi-game suspension after a dirty hit on Markieff Morris in Monday’s win over Miami. That said, Jokic has been the best player in the NBA so far and looks ready to defend his MVP title. As long as the Nuggets can field a semi-competent roster around him, there’s no reason to panic.

  • 10. New York Knicks (7-4)

New York’s defense has dipped in recent games, but even so, this Knicks team looks much improved over last season. With a deeper reserve of shot-makers and a clear third-season leap from R.J. Barrett, the Knicks are on the shortlist of real contenders in the East. It’s always hard to bank on a Tom Thibodeau team in the playoffs, but in the regular season, there is no reason to doubt New York’s stature.
