Against the San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia saw one of it’s own sons in Charlie Brown Jr. take the floor for his hometown team. Not only did the Philadelphia 76ers crush the Spurs 119-100, but Brown Jr. also played an important part in that victory.

In the game, Brown Jr. finished with three points, three rebounds, one assist, two steals, and a block. Brown Jr. is exactly the type of young wing the team should continue to develop and to have on their roster. The 76ers need to turn Brown Jr.’s 10-day contract into a permanent two-way contract.

Brown Jr. needs to be on the Philadelphia 76ers roster permanently for the rest of this season.

This isn’t the first time I wrote about how Brown Jr. should be on Philly’s radar. He was one of the players’ I suggested that they should sign to a 10-day contract. Glad to see that they obliged to my suggestion after he was on a 10-day contract with the Dallas Mavericks earlier this year.

In all seriousness, he does fit their need for an athletic wing who at 6-foot-6 can defend and rebound well for his position. This season on the Sixers’ G-League Affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, Brown Jr. has averaged 16.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.6 steals, while shooting 40.0 percent from the 3-point line, (all stats listed are G-League career highs).

This is Brown Jr.’s third season as he’s had brief stints with the Atlanta Hawks and Oklahoma City Thunder in his first two years. With that in mind, he still qualifies to sign for a two-way contract, according to CBAFAQ.com. That is as long as he signs one before January 15th of this year.

While the Sixers could sign Brown Jr. to a regular spot, it can be argued that there isn’t a player the Sixers shouldn’t want to waive to make room for him on their 15-man roster. Instead, signing him to a two-way spot won’t count against the salary cap and would give them more flexibility in any potential Ben Simmons trade.

It should be noted that the 76ers have both of their two-way contract spots filled by Aaron Henry and Myles Powell. Powell is important to the team’s point guard depth so he’s probably not going anywhere. This means Henry would be the odd man out, which is fair. He’s struggled on the NBA stage and hasn’t impressed on the G-League level either.

Swapping out Brown Jr. for Henry would be the smart move for the Philadelphia 76ers front office. Brown showed flashes in his young NBA career of being capable of becoming an NBA rotational wing and the Sixer should continue to foster that growth for the rest of this season.
