Philadelphia 76ers can’t bet on Shake Milton’s health this season

The point guard position has been a position of flux for the Philadelphia 76ers this season. The biggest issue at the playmaking spot is the fact that Ben Simmons has essentially divorced himself from the franchise, however, he’s not the only issue.

There’s no denying that Tyrese Maxey has been a bright spot for the Sixers. He’s showing growth throughout the season and he can potentially be a future All-Star. However, the depth is still incomplete.

Grant Riller was supposed to be the team’s emergency point guard this season, but due to injuries, the 76ers waived him from his two-way contract and replaced him with Myles Powell who has been less than stellar at the position.

However, the main backup this season without Simmons in the mix was supposed to Shake Milton. When available, Milton has been a serviceable backup point guard, despite it not being his natural position. However, his availability has been the biggest issue for Philly this year.

The Philadelphia 76ers can’t bet on Milton’s availability.

The Sixers have played in 53 games this season and yet Milton has alone suited up for 27 of those outings. He’s essentially missed half of the 76ers season up to this point and according to head coach Doc Rivers, per Ky Carlin of SixerWire, Milton doesn’t have a timeline to return and he’s not even doing basketball-related activities.

Without a clear outlook for recovery for the combo guard, the Sixers have to consider other options entering the trade deadline. Even if a Simmons trade doesn’t occur,  Philly’s front office has to consider alternatives in either a trade or the buyout market to fill the void at backup point guard.

Milton’s been solid this season for the Philadelphia 76ers, but his health issues have made it so that the Sixers should look for outside help at the point guard position moving forward.
