Ranking every Sixers player — 15. Jaden Springer

Jaden Springer has seen very little NBA action in his rookie season. The reigning 28th overall pick has spent long stretches of the campaign in Delaware, getting reps with the Blue Coats and cutting his teeth against lesser talent. Naturally, some have questioned whether Springer was the best use of a first-round pick, especially given the importance of depth in this COVID-warped season.

The 19-year-old Springer was among the youngest players drafted last summer, so it’s no surprise he isn’t ready to contribute yet. Springer — who was the No. 15 prospect on my personal big board — was always a project of sorts. He isn’t a polished scorer or playmaker, but his instincts and defensive potential make him well worth the investment.

In the end, Philadelphia was never going to rely extensively on the 28th pick this season. Using it on something of a long-term play makes sense. Springer has shown plenty of flashes in the G-League (15.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals, 1.0 block in 28.8 minutes). He was one of college basketball’s best perimeter defenders as an 18-year-old, and while he doesn’t play the sexiest brand of offense, Springer can make connective passes and use his running back’s frame to get downhill and finish at the rim.

The Sixers should keep faith and stay the course with Springer. Shake Milton’s contract expires in the not so distant future and Danny Green’s playing days are numbered. Sooner than later, Philadelphia will have an opening on the perimeter — one Springer could take advantage of.
