Who is a better playmaker for the Sixers: James Harden or Ben Simmons?

Individual success will not be enough to win a championship on a professional level. Creating open looks for teammates is a huge responsibility for players who control the offense. Both James Harden’s and Ben Simmons’ offensive abilities force opposing defenses to defend them in different ways.

When defenses see Ben Simmons cut to the basket, they are reminded of how well he finishes at the rim. James Harden’s lethal step-back 3-point shot causes defenses to defend the 3-point line. Every defensive adjustment made to prevent the scoring of Simmons or Harden allows other teammates to opportunities to score open baskets.

Getting teammates more involved has been the focus for Harden as of late. His last three seasons show his development in spreading the floor.  James Harden has maintained a 10-assist season average since the 2020 regular season.

A lot of time has passed since Ben Simmons’ last performance on the hardwood. Before the All-NBA guard decided to sit out for half of the regular season, he was known for his playmaking abilities. Passing the ball and pushing fast breaks made Ben Simmons a star in the city of Brotherly Love and earned him rookie of the year honors in 2018. Since then, Simmons’ has maintained a 7.7 career assist average — .7 more than Harden’s career total.
