Re-drafting the 2021 NBA Draft — 11. Trey Murphy III, Hornets

Trey Murphy just played critical minutes in the playoffs. It’s clear the Pelicans smashed the 2021 draft out of the park. Now, it’s the Hornets who strike gold on Murphy — an impact wing who stretches the floor and defends multiple positions well.

One of the best shooters in the draft, Murphy would be right at home feasting off passes from LaMelo Ball. The Hornets’ offense has never had trouble generating looks and pushing the pace. Murphy doesn’t do much self-creating, but he moves without the ball, he makes quick decisions as a passer, and he can hit 3s from any angle.

His defense, however, is what’s most attractive here. Charlotte’s defense is unbelievably bad, and Murphy’s nimble 6-foot-9 frame could go a long way towards making them more watchable on both sides of the ball. The Hornets have the personnel to switch 1-5 and run uniquely versatile lineups. In theory, at least. Murphy is a proven good defender who can aid them in their pursuit of relevance in the East.
