Should the Philadelphia 76ers trade/buy a second round pick?

This upcoming draft might be the least exciting one for the Philadelphia 76ers since before the “The Process” began almost a decade ago. The Sixers only have one first round pick entering the 2022 NBA Draft and it’s a bit underwhelming.

Christopher Kline has recently written about different options for the 23rd pick in the draft. Kline covered three options at each the point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center positions.

While it’s nice to have one pick, there’s a possibility that the 76ers could purchase or trade for a second round pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. The question becomes, should they do that?

Is trading for/buying a second round pick a good option for the Philadelphia 76ers?

In the second round, the following teams have multiple second round picks.

  • Indiana Pacers (31, 60)
  • Orlando Magic (32, 35)
  • Portland Trail Blazers (36, 59)
  • Sacramento Kings (37, 49)
  • Cleveland Cavaliers (39, 58)
  • Minnesota Timberwolves (40, 48, 50)
  • New Orleans Pelicans (41, 52)
  • Golden State Warriors (51, 57)

Rebuilding teams like the Pacers, Magic, and even the Pacers are unlikely to part ways with second round picks. However, there are other teams from that list that could be willing to part ways with their picks.

Teams on the cusp of being playoff teams like the Kings and Cavaliers might give up a second round pick for a veteran. Playoff teams like the Warriors, Pelicans, and Timberwolves might be willing to sell those picks depending on their salary cap situation.

The availability to trade or purchase a second round pick is there, the question is should they. The Sixers have a history of hitting on second round picks in recent history. Going back to “The Process” days, Jerami Grant and Richaun Holmes would be prime examples.

However, this current roster has several recent second round picks contributing to the rotation last season in Shake Milton and Paul Reed. Isaiah Joe and Charles Bassey could be in line for bigger roles next season as well.

With the availability of getting a second round pick, along with the Philadelphia 76ers’ success selecting with those picks, it would be ideal if they did acquire a second round pick for this draft.
