Philadelphia 76ers: Daryl Morey’s small mistakes cannot repeat: Possibly being fooled by Matisse Thybulle’s Olympic play

Now, this next one is certainly speculation but maybe Daryl Morey was fooled by Matisse Thybulle’s showing in the 2021 Summer Olympics. Thybulle suited up for Team Australia and contributed to the team’s first-ever medal, a bronze. The shooting guard averaged 7.8 points, on 62.1/41.7/60.7 shooting splits, 3.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 3 steals in 23.2 minutes per game.

The problem with his small sample size in the Olympics is that no flashes of improvements on offense were seen throughout the season. Theoretically, the Sixers do have a two-way impactful wing player in former (this could revert back if he improves on his weaknesses) fan-favorite Matisse Thybulle.

Thybulle is coming off his second consecutive season being named to an NBA All-Defensive team but his season ended in a shaky manner. Thybulle not eligible for the first-round road playoff games in the Toronto Raptors series threw off the continuity for Thybulle himself and his teammates.

The time off and the situation certainly threw off Thybulle’s confidence. So much so that he went on the record himself confirming. Despite the sour taste he left in the mouths of everyone watching, it is reasonable to believe that Thybulle can be more of the player we’ve seen in the past. Especially in the case of the 76ers adding more depth. That reason could be partially why teams are interested in trading for him.
