2022 Summer League and there’s a few guys to watch out for: Julian Champagnie

He may have gone undrafted this year, but Julian Champagnie was a guy that most experts believed would go high in the second round who instead fell out of the draft and into Philly’s lap. The team addressed experience and toughness with the additions of Tucker, Melton, and House, but their other big needs were improved play behind Embiid. They need more length and youth on the wings.

Champagnie is a talented 6-foot-8 wing who can play both forward spots, although the small forward is probably where he can contribute the most. He is tough, fearless, and a solid 3-and-D wing who is willing to fill a particular role and play without ego.

He averaged 19.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 2.0 assists per game last year, although a lot of his numbers are a little skewed because he had to carry a less talented St. John’s team and was often asked to do too much.

He plays the passing lanes well and picks up weak side block shots, but will have to improve his concentration while staying with his man off the ball. He is also a good passer and facilitator, but he struggles to create his own shot.

He is a better catch-and-shoot player, which would make him a great addition to the current team, which is in need of catch-and-shoot, 3-and-D guys. The main reason he fell was not a question of his ability, but a belief that he may not be athletic enough to succeed at the next level. If he can show the ability to get his shot off and keep his man in front of him, Champagnie could be a steal.
