Sixers: Best and worst of Summer League game against Grizzlies
The Good
Aminu Mohammed: 2 PTS | 3 REB | 2 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 3 PF | 1-2 FGs | 0-0 3Ps | 0-0 FTs | 12 MIN
I wasn’t expecting much from Aminu Mohammed when I was he was on the roster and just looking at the box score most would think he didn’t do much. However, he had elite defense during this game and made smart choices on offense. If he can contribute more offensive moving forward, then he might get a training camp invite.
Cassius Winston: 2 PTS | 1 REB | 8 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PF | 2-3 FGs | 0-0 3Ps | 0-0 FTs | 17 MIN
Cassius Winston has two years of NBA experience and is an experienced scorer on the G-League level as well. However, in this game he proved he can be more than just a scorer by dishing out eight assists. If he can balance out the passing and scorer he might be worth a look at training camp.
Grant Riller: 12 PTS | 1 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 1 PF | 6-10 FGs | 0-3 3Ps | 0-0 FTs | 13 MIN
Last season was disappointing for Grant Riller as he struggled with injuries so much that the Sixers had to replace him with Myles Powell on a two-way contract. However, Riller showed why he was a former second round pick as he was a spark plug scoring off the bench in this game.
Charlie Brown Jr.: 15 PTS | 7 REB | 2 AST | 2 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 1 PF | 5-9 FGs | 2-6 3Ps | 3-4 FTs | 22 MIN
This was the type of game Charlie Brown Jr. needed. He showed solid two-way play and an ability to hit open 3-pointers. The 76ers were truly wise to keep him on a two-way contract entering next season. If he can do this consistently during the Summer League, don’t be surprised that at some point during the regular season he gets his opportunity.
Isaiah Joe: 19 PTS | 2 REB | 3 AST | 2 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 4 PF | 7-15 FGs | 4-12 3Ps | 1-1 FTs | 28 MIN
Isaiah Joe showed he was more than a willing shooter in this matchup. It’s true that he wasn’t the most efficient 3-point shooter, but he impacted the game in other areas with his playmaking and defense as well. Which is something Philly’s coaching staff loves to see.
Paul Reed: 20 PTS | 15 REB | 1 AST | 4 STL | 0 BLK | 5 TO | 3 PF | 8-15 FGs | 1-3 3Ps | 3-4 FTs | 31 MIN
It seems unfair that Paul Reed is even playing for the Sixers in Summer League action. He’s clearly the team’s best player and outside of five turnovers, he had a great game. If he can cut down the turnovers, Reed could be one of the better players getting minutes this summer.
Luckily for the Sixers, there weren’t too many players who had a bad game. However, it would be great if they could get a win in their next matchup against the Utah Jazz on July 6, 2022.
