76ers Top 5 Most Memorable Plays – (#1) Joel Embiid’s 3-pointer
TOTH to ESPN for the quote below.
"“Tobias set an amazing screen. Danny threw a great pass. All I had to do was finish, and I’m glad I did.” – Joel Embiid"
The top play that is seared in the minds of Philadelphia 76ers fans forever is a playoff moment granted to us by Joel Embiid. The play is one of those that people will recall where they were when Embiid knocked down, arguably, the most clutch shot in his entire career.
The game itself was hard to watch. The Sixers committed 24 turnovers and had no business still being in the game late in the fourth quarter. After clawing back and staying persistent, the Sixers took the game into overtime against the Toronto Raptors in Game 3 of the first-round series. Then, the biggest opportunity on one of the biggest stages of Embiid’s career confronted him with less than a second left on the clock.
As Danny Green took the ball from the referee out of bounds, the Sixers ran their set. Tobias Harris set a screen to get Embiid a clean look at the rim. After Embiid caught the ball, he gathered himself quickly, and Fred VanVleet took a swipe at the ball. Too late. Embiid pulled up and shot a 3-pointer with every Toronto fan holding their breath.
The ball swished through the net, and the 76ers celebrated in front of a crowd that has tortured Embiid since the Kawhi Leonard shot eliminated Philly from the playoffs several years ago. The shot was clutch, and in many ways, it vindicated Joel Embiid from the prison of playoff underperformance. It is for this reason that this play is the most memorable play from the 2021-2022 Sixers season.
