Philadelphia 76ers: Ranking Joel Embiid’s backups up to 2022
4. Amir Johnson
Amir Johnson is a unique player on this list. He had the longest tenure as Embiid’s primary backup with two seasons under his belt. He did a great job during his first providing good defense off the bench. However, during his second season, father time caught up with the veteran and he couldn’t perform at the same level. His last season with the Philadelphia 76ers and in the NBA was in the 2018-19 season.
3. Dwight Howard
“In terms of overall skills, one could argue that Al Horford should be number one on this list.”
In terms of career accolades and being a top-10 player in the NBA during his prime, there are no other players on this list who can compare to Dwight Howard. Howard came to Philly well after his prime during the 2020-21 season. He provided well above average defense, rebuilding, and veteran leadership during his stint. However, due to his age, he was exposed in certain matchups and wasn’t a threat on offense.
2. Al Horford
In terms of overall skills, one could argue that Al Horford should be number one on this list. However, fit and health stopped Horford from playing his best in Philadelphia. He was splitting time at the four and the five which made his fit behind and next to Embiid sloppy. It didn’t help that the 76ers grossly overpaid for the veteran either.
1. Andre Drummond
That leaves Andre Drummond as the best backup that Embiid has had in his career. Drummond bought into his role after once being an All-Star during his career. He played almost elite level defense and was still rebounding at an elite level despite coming off the bench. He was limited in what he could do on offense, but what he could do he did so very well. He was so good that the Nets made the Sixers include him in the trade that landed Harden in Philadelphia.
