Goal for Sixers’ Tobias Harris: Career high 3-point attempts
Building on Harris’ efficiency goal: he should strive to take the most efficient shots possible. That means getting all the way to the rim, or letting it fly from deep. He shouldn’t erase the mid-range from his diet entirely — there’s value in a good dribble pull-up game — but Harris should focus his energies on the Morey-Ball classics.
Harris has always been a good, even great 3-point shooter. If only he were less hesitant. Too often we have seen Harris pass up clean looks beyond the arc in favor of aimlessly dribbling into no-man’s land, where he either forces a contested jumper or waits two seconds too long to make a pass. He improved greatly in this respect toward the end of last season — by necessity with Harden’s ball-dominant presence on the perimeter — and he should look to build on that improvement in 2022-23.
Only twice in his career has Harris averaged 5+ attempts per game from deep. Last season, he took only 3.8 per game (that number did jump up to 4.6 after Harden joined the lineup). He should aim for 6+ next season.
The Sixers feature two ball-dominant superstars who thrive most when the floor is spaced around them. Harris’ best opportunities to score will come via spot-up 3s. He’s capable of creating his own offense from time to time, but the Sixers don’t really need Harris to create. They need him to finish plays. If he has space to fire, Harris should not hesitate. He’s too good a shooter not to rack up the attempts.
