5 potential free agent options to begin the season: Marquess Chriss and Carmelo Anthony

At the beginning of this article, I wrote about Whiteside as a traditional center option for the Sixers. While he isn’t a bad option, he’s not the only one for the Sixers to consider. Former lottery pick Marquese Chriss is another big man who could give Philly a different look at the center spot.

Chriss is only 25 years old so he could be a long-term piece for the 76ers. He’s one of the more athletic big men in the league and can defend on the perimeter. He’s also a good rim runner on offense who can occasionally stretch the floor. Injuries and immaturity have been problems for Chriss in the past but a solid franchise like Philly could help him become more mature.

Last but not least is future Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony. Drafted the same year as LeBron James, Anthony was once one of the biggest stars in the NBA but now can provide solid bench scoring for a contender.

The Philadelphia 76ers could use scoring off the bench and he would be an upgrade over Georges Niang at power forward. The main issue is that he’s a liability on the defensive end. Another thing to consider is that he and 76ers President of basketball operations Daryl Morey didn’t end their relationship well when they were both with the Houston Rockets well. However, if both can get past that, he could help this team.

There’s a reason why these players are free agents, but that doesn’t mean they can’t help the Sixers’ depth if Philly signs one of them this season.
