Rookie of the Year

1. Paolo Banchero, Magic

Lackluster efficiency numbers have led some to question the strength of Paolo Banchero’s case for No. 1, but there’s not much competition here. Banchero has been the primary offensive engine for Orlando from the jump, methodically punishing defenders from everywhere on the floor with his unique blend of size, strength and skill. No rookie has been more involved in every facet of his team’s success. Banchero is already teetering on the brink of NBA stardom.

2. Jalen Williams, Thunder

Jalen Williams’ strong second half of the season has vaulted him into the conversation, with some pundits even arguing that hey, maybe he should actually be higher than Paolo. Williams’ advanced numbers are much prettier and OKC is in the play-in tournament — an actually competitive team, with Williams being the third (or maybe even second)-best player. His defensive versatility and reliability as a rookie has been pleasantly surprising. Banchero has the award locked up, but Williams is an impressive runner-up with a bright future.

3. Walker Kessler, Jazz

Walker Kessler is already on the shortlist of the best rim protectors in basketball. In the years to come, his minutes per game will increase, his comfort level with rise, and he could sneak into the All-Defense — or even DPOY — conversation before long. He’s on that trajectory. In addition to the elite shot-blocking and paint presence on defense, Kessler can clean the glass and operate effectively as a rim-runner on offense.

Honorable mention: Keegan Murray, Kings
