The Philadelphia 76ers are coming off a huge Game 1 win in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, 119-115, in Boston without their superstar Joel Embiid. The Sixers, and Embiid, hope they receive good news about his playing availability for Wednesday night in Game 2. However, there may be some other important news coming for Embiid earlier this week with regard to his dominant regular-season performance.
The NBA MVP will be announced Tuesday, May 2nd.
Tonight, the NBA on TNT crew will announce the NBA Most Valuable Player of the 2022-23 NBA season at 7:00 pm EST. TNT has been announcing all of the regular season awards before playoff games over the last couple of weeks, culminating in the biggest award of them all, the MVP award. The finalists for this award were announced in mid-April and include Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks), Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets), and of course Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers).
Jokic is the two-time reigning MVP award winner and is looking to become the fourth player ever to win 3 consecutive MVPs, joining Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and Larry Bird. Before Jokic won back-to-back MVP awards, Giannis accomplished that feat himself, having won in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.
Embiid is the only one of these three players that has not won MVP.
That could all change tonight though, as Embiid is the heavy betting favorite and has been for over a month. It is also worth noting he was the runner-up in each of the last two seasons to Jokic for the MVP award, so this one feels personal. Embiid led the NBA in scoring for the second consecutive year with 33.1 points per game and was 8th in rebounds with 10.2 per game.
We are obviously biased in the City of Brotherly Love, but Embiid deserves the MVP this season and we will find out tonight if the dream comes true. Tune into TNT at 7 to find out!
