3 Celtics free agents to evaluate: Blake Griffin
There was a time not too long ago when Blake Griffin was a top 15 player in the NBA one of the best power forwards in the NBA. However, injuries caught up to the former All-Star when he was with the Detroit Pistons. Then he became the backup center for the Brooklyn Nets and now he’s a veteran presence on a Celtics team where he doesn’t get regular minutes.
Injuries may have deprived fans of seeing a prime Griffin in his 30s, but he has provided solid spot minutes for Boston this past season. During the regular season, he averaged 4.1 points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from downtown.
Paul Reed will be a free agent and Dewayne Dedmon’s contract isn’t guaranteed this offseason so the Sixers will need more center depth. Griffin can’t do much defensively, but he can help the offense on occasion.
If the Philadelphia 76ers do go after Griffin, he will be affordable, but if they do, then Montrezl Harrell will probably have to be traded if he picks up his player option. While Griffin is more diverse offensively, he’s still just as limited defensive as Harrell so having both on the roster would be problematic.
