The Philadelphia 76ers need more center depth behind Joel Embiid. Though they already have Ariel Hukporti and Adem Bona, they cannot count on Embiid being healthy. And if Hukporti and Bona are their only two centers when he’s out, that’s not good enough. The free-agency market isn’t great either, so they may have to consider a trade.
It doesn’t have to be a crazy deal. In fact, Philly doesn’t really even have the contracts to make a crazy deal. But adding another quality center to the bench would be ideal for the Sixers. It’s something they need to seriously consider doing before the regular season begins, because Embiid needs as much support as possible.
With that in mind, here are three players the 76ers could potentially trade for in order to help Embiid at the center spot this season.
Center trade targets for the 76ers: 1. Jalen Smith
A trade for Jalen Smith would only make sense if the Sixers eventually believe Anfernee Simons is expendable. Not necessarily likely, but not impossible, considering how much ball-handling and scoring they already have on the roster.
Smith makes over $9 million this season, but he’s a quality big man who can play the four and five. His defense and hint of floor-spacing make him an interesting option.
He’s certainly more proven at this point in his career than Hukporti and Bona are, and he’d make a great, versatile backup center option for Philly.
2. Jericho Sims
Again, the Sixers don’t need to make a big swing at the center spot. Simply adding another body will do. And Jericho Sims would certainly help the Sixers do that.
Sims is a freak athlete. He hasn’t managed to stand out up to this point in the NBA, but he played pretty well for the Milwaukee Bucks last year, flashing just enough potential to stick around.
But as the Bucks are rebuilding and Sims is on a very small contract, he could be a potential target for the Sixers to consider.
3. Yves Missi
It would probably take a pretty decent package, especially compared to the other options, but snagging Yves Missi would be a massive win for the 76ers.
Missi was an All-Rookie player two years ago, and his defense and rebounding have stood out. He’s a legitimate NBA defender.
Having a guy like him – especially at just 22 years old – would be more than ideal for Philadelphia. He may be too expensive, but the Sixers should at least inquire about Missi.
