Another free agency dilemma for the 76ers.

Just like last summer, the Philadelphia 76ers will once again be on deck for a tough call with regard to Quentin Grimes and his free agency situation. The team managed to get lucky in the previous offseason when the market gave them a free pass and allowed them to defer the tough reckoning to this year, but now, that juncture is upon them.

The most likely scenario is that the 76ers will try to re-sign Grimes to another deal during free agency. However, ESPN's Bobby Marks recently laid down the projected deal for the 26-year-old, and it could very well lead the front office into a tough corner. The team still needs him as their primary catalyst off the bench, yet his expected price tag could still throw them off in a major way.

This season, Grimes averaged 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per outing in nearly 30 minutes a night. His shooting splits were far from impressive though, as he drained just 45 percent of his shots and 33.4 percent from beyond the arc. Most concerningly, his numbers dropped hard in the playoffs, as he registered just 6.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, shooting just 39.7 percent overall.

The 76ers need Quentin Grimes, but his next contract could sink them

Philly does not have a lot of money to go around free agents this year, but their primary concern is their lack of reliable backups off the bench. As such, that makes it all the more important that the 76ers secure Grimes for the 2026-27 campaign at the very least.

Marks expects Grimes to command a deal to the tune of two years and $30 million with a player option in the second year. While that does not sound too onerous of a commitment on the 76ers' part, having to sign to that kind of deal would sap them of cap space to get their hands on quality role players. Worse, that could put them in a tough spot when it comes to another vital free agent in Kelly Oubre Jr.

The 76ers will basically be in a double bind where they cannot afford to lose Quentin Grimes, but his short-term cost would nevertheless be quite debilitating from a roster-building standpoint. Hence, it appears that there is no clear-cut resolution here that will make everyone happy, and it also bears noting that his camp is has not exactly been of the uber-reasonable type drawing from last summer.

Hopefully, the front office can find a way to strike a meaningful balance between maintaining flexibility and keeping those players they truly need. It is way easier said than done, but with the right push, they should be able to do exactly that.
