Don't expect the Philadelphia 76ers to make any notable moves anytime soon. After a rather busy summer, which included a blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown and winning the highly valuable LeBron James free-agency sweepstakes, the Sixers are in a great spot.
But as always, things change fast in the NBA. The team will likely find some weaknesses that they'll have to address. There's an open roster spot that could be used for a trade or a buyout market addition.
Considering the 76ers don't have too many tradeable contracts beyond their stars, they will more than likely have some buy-low targets they are keeping their eyes on. If the Sixers make a call to the Milwaukee Bucks, their realistic target could be the six-year guard, Kevin Porter Jr.
Going to the fire sale in Milwaukee
Giannis Antetokounmpo is no longer in Wisconsin. Now that the dreadful Greek Freak sweepstakes is over, you can bet that the Bucks will be holding a fire sale in Milwaukee as they navigate through a rebuild.
Kevin Porter Jr. is going to have a solid opportunity to build up his trade value. After coming off the bench in 2024-2025, Porter started all but two of the 38 games he played last season. In a low-stakes situation, he thrived by averaging 17.4 points per game, along with 7.4 assists, and 5.2 rebounds. That's solid production for a player who is making $5.3 million.
But front offices know not to be fooled by role players putting together star-level stretches in bad situations. The Sixers saw it two years ago with Quentin Grimes. When Porter played in more competitive situations recently, he averaged 10.3 points and 3.4 assists per game off the bench in stretches with the Los Angeles Clippers and the Bucks. That's quality bench work.
The Bucks don't seem eager to lock in Porter with a long-term deal at this time. He'll be a player worth paying attention to.
Why the Sixers might go there
The center depth is obviously the biggest concern for Philadelphia. Joel Embiid is frequently out, while Adem Bona and Ariel Hukporti are still trying to prove themselves as long-term options. Imagine one--or both--prove that they can hold their own while Embiid is consistently on the court.
That might cause the Sixers to pivot to their guard depth. Up top, it's strong. Tyrese Maxey is an All-Star, while VJ Edgecombe is one of the best sophomores in the game. Everybody should be bullish on Anfernee Simons, but he's not necessarily a pure point guard.
In a perfect world, the Sixers hit big on Labaron Philon Jr., and they don't have to go shopping for point guard depth. But we'll tame expectations on that front. The Sixers have a combination of small contracts that could help match Porter. Hukporti/Bona (choose the one you don't want) paired with Justin Edwards or Dominick Barlow (same idea), and you have a path to Porter, who has career averages of 14.4 points, 4.9 assists, and 4.3 rebounds, while shooting 34.8% from three.
