76ers could have one controversial card left to play to sign LeBron

The Philadelphia 76ers remain in the running for LeBron James, but as previously stated and echoed, the prevailing sentiment right now is that the Cleveland Cavaliers are reckoned to be the favorites to sign the superstar. That being said, the Sixers are not exactly helpless even if that is indeed the case. After all, they could have one final trump card to play before the King makes his decision.

This possible ace up their sleeve partakes the form of the 76ers actually trading for Bronny James, LeBron's son who is currently still under contract with the Lakers. Obviously, that could rub off the wrong way with people, but with someone like James at stake, there is no reason for Philly's brain trust to care about appearances.

The Cavaliers have a compelling case as LeBron's potentially final team, making them the clear team to beat. As such, the 76ers might be cudgeled into having to resort to other external means to lure in his camp outside of an actual pitch, which may, in and of itself, involve Bronny as a bait. After all, the 22-time All-Star would probably be enthused by the prospect of spending his final campaign with his son.

The 76ers could trade for Bronny to lure LeBron James into Philly

The younger James remains with the Lakers as his contract for the 2026-27 campaign was fully guaranteed a while back. Of course, that presupposes roster control for LA, meaning that the 76ers –– or any other prospective bidders –– will have to actually move the needle to try and convince the Lakers to dangle him away elsewhere.

Obviously, that is a bit of a roadkill for a third-string player like Bronny, but independent of his actual basketball skills, him being the son of LeBron is an asset in itself. Teams that are interested in landing the senior James will be heavily ponderant of the fact that Bronny fcoul;d be used as a tool to bolster their case for the superstar.

As off-putting as that may sound, the 76ers are not precluded from resorting to that option. Of course, the fact that it is an option means that it is available. Utilitarian or not, teams will come out as hard as possible for a shot at being James' next and possibly final ball club.

For now, LeBron James seems to be taking his time in choosing his next destination –– and rightfully so. Hopefully, the 76ers will be able to get their pitch into an actual cause for eventual selection, lest they may be forced to rely on a last-ditch attempt like trading for Bronny, which is not ideal but potentially necessary.
