76ers could turn one forgotten veteran into a grand offseason heist

The 76ers should definitely capitalize.

The Philadelphia 76ers have a handful of pressing needs on the roster, but they would be hard-pressed to find a more urgent one than their lack of bench scoring. As a result, it is now incumbent upon the new-look front office to effectuate some upgrades in their second unit. To that effect, one player they could take a look at in the open market is Bogdan Bogdanovic.

The Serbian wing is technically not a free agent yet, but the Clippers are a near-guarantee to decline the team option on his contract amounting to approximately $16 million to return next season. Bogdanovic barely even saw the floor in the recently concluded campaign for LA due to injuries, which means that his price tag has probably reached an all-time low. That plays into what the 76ers are looking for in free agency.

Bogdanovic is already pushing 34 years old, which is a bit of a red flag in itself. He also heavily underperformed for the Clippers after registering career-low marks across the board. Be that as it may, the veteran wing is still a stable hand who can do wonders for the 76ers off the bench.

The 76ers should keep a close eye on Bogdan Bogdanovic in free agency

Bogdanovic might have taken a steep decline this season, but there is credence in penciling his struggles in as a one-year aberration. After all, he is not far removed at all from consistently being one of the best bench operators in the NBA. He still has something left in the tank, and his strengths could definitely help this 76ers squad in particular.

Philadelphia ranked 27th among all teams in bench scoring, which ended up backfiring pretty badly when the postseason came. The 76ers simply lacked players who can generate any semblance of offense for themselves or for others, and that proved to be a death knell as they exited the postseason in humiliating fashion.

With the Serbian not expected to command a heavy price tag anyway, the 76ers should seriously consider going after him. There is a possibility that Bogdanovic returns to Europe, but with the right offer, Philly can seize him to bolster their bench. After all, he is still a capable secondary playmaker and three-point shooter.

The Philadelphia 76ers do not have much operating room financially to make drastic additions to the roster. However, inexpensive players like Bogdan Bogdanovic will allow them to work around that deficiency. Hopefully, the front office can strike the iron while still hot, lest they risk trotting out another shallow roster next season.
