A former member of the Philadelphia 76ers' front office landed a new gig this offseason. The name Bryan Colangelo might ring a bell with Sixers fans from all over.
Yes, that guy just landed a new job in the basketball world, but he’s taking his expertise beyond the National Basketball Association. According to the NBA insider Marc Stein, Colangelo is stepping into an advisor role with BC Roma—a team that is co-founded by Donnie Nelson and Luka Doncic.
How is that guy getting a new job?
The Sixers stint with Colangelo running the Philly front office was strongly disliked by fans from the jump. As Sam Hinkie, the face of the famous “Trust The Process” days, resigned with a push from the league, Colangelo was accused of being handed the job without really earning it. What he did later on down the line just frustrated Philly fans even more.
For what it’s worth, Colangelo does have a long track record in the NBA as an executive. Before his three-year run with the Sixers, Colangelo spent eight seasons in the Toronto Raptors’ front office. Before that, he was with the Phoenix Suns for 13 seasons. During his time with the Suns, Phoenix won 58.3% of their games. Colangelo has two Executive of the Year awards on his resume.
But that time with the Sixers? Laughable.
Not necessarily due to the fact that the Sixers were bad on the court. After all, Colangelo took over a tank job. In his first full season in charge, the Sixers posted a 28-54 record. He would gladly take credit for selecting Ben Simmons No. 1 overall in 2016. Then by the second full season, the Sixers were entering the playoff picture for the first time during the Joel Embiid era.
It wouldn’t be long before the beans were spilled about Colangelo’s off-court activity. The former exec was accused of running burner accounts, where he defended himself and trashed players on his own team anonymously. He foolishly took shots at Joel Embiid, who has been one of the best players the Sixers have ever seen suit up for their franchise.
Colangelo denied that he was involved in any wrongdoing. He would later resign from his position, which led the Sixers to shake up their front office not long before the 2018 NBA Draft. That year, the Sixers placed Brett Brown in the position to lead the front office before officially naming Elton Brand the GM moving forward.
It wasn’t good times for the Sixers, but it was surely interesting times. Colangelo won’t be in the same leadership position with BC Roma, but that won’t stop Sixers fans from getting a good chuckle over the fact that Colangelo landed another job in the industry.
