Joel Embiid’s status for the Philadelphia 76ers’ season-opener against the Boston Celtics on October 22nd remains a mystery. However, Brian Windhorst’s latest update may have given more clarity on the matter.

Windhorst reported on ESPN’s “The Hoop Collective” podcast Monday that the 76ers’ front office and coaching staff are optimistic about Embiid’s recovery. While Windhorst noted that Philadelphia’s positivity is a good sign, there is still no set timetable for his return. Embiid is yet to play in the preseason as he continues to rehab his left knee after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure on April 11th.

The latest on Embiid

However, the 76ers’ optimism aligned with what fans experienced on Sunday.

Embiid participated in Philadelphia’s annual Blue-White Scrimmage – an exhibition where its starters and reserves battle for the fandom’s enjoyment. Although stats weren’t recorded, Embiid appeared sharp physically and mentally. The 2023 Most Valuable Player seemed to be in good spirits and moved well, especially when he attacked off the dribble. Embiid taking the floor was a sight for sore eyes, but it’s essential to note the friendly nature of the scrimmage.

Nick Nurse described Embiid’s performance as a good progression day for him, Austin Krell of OnPattison reported on Sunday. Nurse said that Embiid has participated in many five-on-five drills, early practice work, and five-on-zero action to get him up to speed.

The seven-time all-star missed Philadelphia’s first two preseason games against the New York Knicks, despite making the trip to Abu Dhabi. Embiid remained sidelined in the 76ers’ 128-98 loss to the Orlando Magic on Friday. Philadelphia plays the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 17th to conclude the preseason and Embiid’s status is yet to be announced.

What to expect

Whenever he returns, fans can expect Embiid to shoulder less of the 76ers’ offensive burden. He has averaged a 35.4% usage rate throughout his nine-year career. For reference, LaMelo Ball led the NBA with a 35.9% mark in the 2024-25 season.

Given the wear and tear of his left knee, Philadelphia is wisely managing Embiid’s load by altering its offensive philosophy. The 76ers offered a preview of their offensive shift in the Blue-White Scrimmage on Sunday. Philadelphia involved Embiid in more screen actions than isolation plays, which could be indicative of what’s to come.

Not only does this keep him fresh, it also helps the 76ers maintain competitiveness in games that Embiid will inevitably be load-managed. If Philadelphia’s offense isn’t solely reliant on Embiid’s post-up play, it will have a proper identity no matter who is playing. The 76ers’ production has historically nosedived without Embiid, but they seem to finally have a plan that benefits both themselves and their franchise cornerstone in the long term.
