When Joel Embiid sat down at the Philadelphia 76ers’ podium, fans could instantly tell something was different.

Embiid seemed to be in a better place, both physically and mentally compared to last season. After much speculation, he appeared to have slimmed down and added more muscle. His refined approach towards his injury and Philadelphia’s outlook served as a breath of fresh air to many. Now, it’s just about staying in the moment.

Embiid said during Media Day on Friday that he and the 76ers have a plan in place for his availability throughout the 2025-26 season. He is trying to check all the boxes necessary and has completed a few workouts. Still, Embiid described his current situation as a feel-out period. He is taking matters one day at a time as the new year approaches.

Embiid’s timeline is TBD

While Embiid’s press conference offered optimism, his return is yet to be determined. The 76ers will travel to Abu Dhabi to play two preseason games against the New York Knicks from October 2nd to 4th. Considering history and his rehabilitation, it may be unlikely that he suits up throughout the preseason.

Regardless, Embiid is taking an approach that is both correct and long overdue.

“I want to be as honest as possible,” Embiid said. “I think going forward, we’re just going to listen to my body. It’s going to be unpredictable at times, and that’s okay. We’ve got to work with that.”

Too many times has Embiid prematurely returned for Philadelphia’s sake to his detriment. Most notoriously, he suffered a torn meniscus in January 2024, but managed to return for the 76ers’ Eastern Conference Quarterfinals matchup against the New York Knicks. Embiid wasn’t able to fully recover, which spiraled into him being limited to 19 games last season.

What can Embiid do in the meantime?

He and Philadelphia are making a wise decision by taking a day-by-day approach rather than forcing him into action as was seemingly the case the season prior. No matter how much time it takes, Embiid must continue to prioritize a clean bill of health as the 76ers’ ceiling depends on that.

Embiid said his goal is to play consistently rather than endure the same situation as last year. For the time being, he is focused on mentoring Philadelphia’s young core, including Jared McCain and V.J. Edgecombe, whom Embiid is very excited about.

“As soon as we drafted [Edgecombe], I just knew I would like him,” Embiid said. “I like his background, he kind of reminds me of myself, coming from another country. He’s an amazing kid.”
