The Philadelphia 76ers are now looking for someone to replace Daryl Morey after they axed the longtime executive just recently. Having said that, while there is no use crying over spilled milk, it is certainly amusing to witness some of the details that have come out of the shadows in light of his unceremonious exit from the franchise.
A certain tidbit that has emerged as of late is the fact that Morey had set his sights on numerous rotation-caliber players before the trade deadline, though he obviously failed to lure in anyone. One name that has popped up is Brandin Podziemski, whom Morey seem to have become enamored with at the time.
Podziemski, who just finished his third season as a pro for the Warriors, is one of the better young all-around guards in the league. He is one of Steve Kerr's clear-cut favorites with the Dubs, essentially functioning as their nominal sixth man and go-to filler option when one of their starters are sidelined.
The 76ers reportedly tried to trade for Brandin Podziemski before the deadline
The decision to trade Jared McCain, which seems to have become a major factor in Morey's ouster, caused the front office to draw so much flak because of the sophomore guard's perceived high value. But more pressing is the fact that it resulted in the 76ers ridding themselves of one of their bench catalysts.
When viewed in light of the McCain trade, their rumored pursuit of Podziemski becomes more sensible. While there is a lot of variance between both players' ouevre, the Warriors guard was a capable scorer and shooter while also being a viable secondary playmaker. On the defensive end, he was also quite competent as a pesky stopper.
Unfortunately, as everyone knows, Morey blew their trade deadline plans. They allegedly had a major deal in mind when they discarded McCain, and if Podziemski was the end goal, the former executive was probably way into his head. After all, Golden State's brain trust values Podziemski way too much, and stacking up draft picks is not exactly the Warriors' desired M.O. given that Steph Curry is still playing like an All-NBA player.
Anyway, this is passé. The 76ers will no longer benefit from reigniting the golden nothings pulled off by Morey. With a critical offseason ahead of them, a very critical first step is now incumbent upon them –– that of finding his replacement who can direct them better in the coming summer.
