76ers fans should hope the franchise does not give into veteran's desires

This would be a nightmare for 76ers fans if it transpires.

With an expected — and poetic — beatdown to Chicago to cap their season off, the Philadelphia 76ers can finally bid adieu to their most deflating season yet. With a 24-58 record, the franchise should have every reason to be active this offseason, as the ever-present desperation for the team to snag meaningful success for themselves has only grown more potent.

The front office’s most proximate goal for now is to get Lady Luck to smile at them in the draft lottery and eventually nail their selection, but of course, that will only be the tip of the iceberg for the franchise. Free agency will once again be vital to the team’s prepwork to get back to relevance next season.

This time, though, the 76ers will be much more handicapped than last year financially. Thus, it is imperative for the front office to be more resourceful and prudent in spending in order to avoid instances of evading reason and going with the mere pulse of the market in making decisions.

However, while Philly has to settle for “less”, this does not mean that they should sign just anyone who projects to be available.

The 76ers front office has to avoid re-signing Kyle Lowry at all costs

Kyle Lowry, who has just finished his 19th season in the NBA, said that he retirement is not yet in his plans, at least until next season, and that he hopes to stay with the 76ers, his hometown club.

While Lowry has definitely earned the right to be yield to sentiment and enjoy his final ride in the league, the 76ers should resist the temptation of giving in to his desires. The former All-Star has taken a deep nosedive this season, and the numbers definitely don’t lie.

This season, the veteran has averaged just 3.9 points and 2.7 assists in 18.8 minutes per outing on a putrid 35 percent shooting from the field, including a below-average 33 percent success rate on his three-point tries. To make matters worse, he missed a total of 47 games in this campaign due to a myriad of injuries.

Nurse has still counted on Lowry to provide some stability in the backcourt, but that could not be any more far from the reality. At this point, Lowry is better off hanging them up, and the 76ers have virtually zero reason to keep giving him a roster spot.

The Philadelphia 76ers badly need reinforcements in the backcourt, especially playmaking and shooting-wise, but going with Kyle Lowry is certainly something fans should hope against.
