The Philadelphia 76ers are hobbled in every sense of the word right now. Four of their five full-time starters are currently out of commission due to injuries for the most part, which could not have come at a worse time given that they are engaged in a tight race for the playoffs in the suddenly jam-packed Eastern Conference, at least in the middle of the standings.
The forward position is especially problematic for the 76ers at the moment. Kelly Oubre Jr. and Paul George remain slated to miss the next week or so. As such, it now incumbent on sophomore forward Justin Edwards to man the role on the interim to help them stay afloat while they await the return of their starting forwards.
But more than just filling in, Edwards has ample reasons to take this stretch more seriously than the other ones. After all, he is effectively facing a make-or-break phase to end the season. If he wants to stay in Philly, he will have to impress the coaching staff and prove that he can still be a real contributor to this squad.
Justin Edwards faces make-or-break stretch with the 76ers to end the season
Philly does not have an abundance of shooting talent in the frontcourt, which makes it all the more imperative for Edwards to break through in that regard. For better or for worse, George and Oubre are already the team’s most reliable floor spacers at the forward positions, and with both of them currently sidelined, the team has no other option than Edwards when it comes to generating space for their remaining guards.
After going undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft, the 76ers scooped him up. To everyone’s pleasant surprise, the former high school standout emerged as a solid contributor for the team, which culminated in him getting rewarded with a standard, three-year contract.
While Edwards has a guaranteed deal for next season, the 76ers can easily find ways to dangle him if he cannot get back to the level he was playing at last season. So far, his shooting has been wildly inconsistent, and his lack of growth in the other parts of the game has people doubting whether his rookie campaign was a fluke.
Fortunately for Justin Edwards, he now possesses the necessary opportunity to prove that he can be a long-term piece for the 76ers. Otherwise, the front office will not waste time parting with him as soon as practicable.
