Suffice to say that the Philadelphia 76ers have a rather ambitious genetic make-up thanks to Daryl Morey. However, the front office is really taking things too far and unnecessary this time around, especially if this latest rumor is true.

After a refutable source came forward with the latest on the rumor mill, 76ers fans were immediately greeted with a brow-raising “development”. The team is rumored to have registered interest about a potential trade for new Celtics guard Anfernee Simons, instantly triggering some perplexed reactions from the fanbase and league circles.

The 26-year-old, who surprisingly saw himself get shipped to Boston in the Jrue Holiday trade, is a bit of a mystery right now. Nobody knows what the Celtics truly intend to do with him, but their reported stance on his role for them next season is pretty telling of the fact that they do not view him as a potential staple on the roster for years to come.

Still, pursuing Simons makes absolutely no sense for the 76ers. And it will not take a lot of thought processing to guess as to why.

The 76ers should steer clear of their rumored trade interest in Anfernee Simons

To cut to the chase, the 76ers have way too many guards that the mere thought of them going after Simons is laughable. Do not even dare to envision an affirmative scenario where someone like, say, Quentin Grimes, gets shipped in exchnage for Simons in a sign-and-trade set-up. It is not feasible.

Simons, who is already entering his prime, is far from a good fit next to what the 76ers already have in store. He is not a natural playmaker, which they need. He is also not a good defender, something the team badly needs on the backcourt.

Hopefully, this is just one of those attention-seeking thought pieces that make much more sense as ice-breakers to give this current lull around the league some admittedly much-needed jolt.

But on a serious note, the 76ers trading for Simons will easily be a big mistake. As currently constructed, the team needs some streamlining of roles given the potential overlaps. Adding another mouth to feed in the backcourt does nothing but to exacerbate that brewing problem.

Daryl Morey may be the biggest name-hunter in the league, but he will not even think of pulling this off, right? Otherwise, fans should call for his head and rally to get him fired.
