The 76ers have been on a hot streak to kick off their 2026-2027 campaign, but one player who has not seen action yet after their first eight games is Dominick Barlow, who has been sidelined since the entirety of the preseason. Nick Nurse recently shed light on the latest with respect to the young big man, but if anything, that so-called update only offers mixed signals about the 23-year-old's availability in the near future.
Prior to the team's outing against the Bulls, Nurse bared that Barlow was going to see a specialist for his injured back, noting that he has taken the court in limited doses so far. He was supposed to get re-evaluated anytime now, but it appears that the 76ers are doubling down on the caution they have exercised so far on Barlow.
Be that as it may, no one is really certain if this development is good ro bad, at least from a temporal point of view.
The 76ers just got a confusing injury update on Dominick Barlow
The 76ers have kept people posted on Barlow's status almost on a daily basis when it is apparent that he is actually week to week with his back injury. Now, him seeing a specialist only reinforces the mystique surrounding his ongoing absence.
This update could be interpreted as good news for the 76ers as the training staff is simply seeking a more professional opinion on the feasibility of his return to play. That being said, people can also see it in a negative light, as back injuries tend to be very pesky and a timeline to return could be quite hazy to say the least.
As such, while Barlow could see some court action pretty soon, the 76ers have to be very cautious about deploying him out there. Philadelphia is one franchise with ample experience on players dealing with back injuries, so they know better than to trot the young big man out when he is not yet fully cleared, despite their clear need for reinforcement in their frontcourt.
Barlow, who was a breakout story for the 76ers last season before his role eventually plummeted, would give the team's big man rotation a different look with his high motor and defensive range. He was working on his shot this offseason, so it will also be interesting to see if the results can translate to the hardwood and his fit with the team improves altogether.
